Pre-Conference Institutes
On Monday, March 3, 2008, six pre-conference institutes will be offered by leading experts in the field. There is no fee to attend the pre-conference institutes; however, pre-registration is required. Please indicate your first and second choices on the conference registration form.  Lunch is available from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM but you must indicate on the registration if you will be having lunch. Event check-in begins at 11:00 AM.

All pre-conference institutes have reached their capacity and are currently closed. 21st Century Community Learning Center Evaluation: What Is Required & How to Develop a Performance Management System (For Cohort 3A and 4)-- This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.
This institute will provide information and strategies to assist 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grantees in the reporting process for the national Profile and Performance Information Collection System (PPICS) Annual Performance Review, on-site monitoring, and the state report. Grantees will receive information regarding the specific roles of local and state evaluators, content of the various reporting requirements, and assistance with identifying data collection methods to fulfill mandated reporting requirements.

B. Fiscal Management for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC)This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.
Do you have questions about your 21st CCLC contract and budget?  Are you unsure what t he process is for reporting budget and program revisions?  Attend this institute where Pennsylvania Department of Education staff will review and answer your questions regarding the required fiscal and program documentation.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the 21st CCLC contract and fiscal experts.

C. Connecting Families, Schools and Communities with Student Success--This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.
A growing body of research demonstrates the positive impact of the family on student progress and achievement in schools.  A segment of the research examines how partnerships among family members, schools and community entities can effectively improve student success.  The Pennsylvania Parent Information Resource Center (PIRC) offers tools and supports to parents, educators and other school professionals and community organizations that strengthen family engagement and encourage partnerships that result in improved student achievement.  In this institute, participants will review the No Child Left Behind legislation, look at the research, and discuss practical ways that family members, schools, afterschool programs and other community groups are making connections with each other.  Participants will examine the tools and materials used, and learn basic elements of developing and implementing successful Family-School-Community Partnerships.

D. After the School Bell Rings: A Staff Development Toolkit--This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.
This institute will prepare you to use “After the School Bell Rings:  A Staff Development Toolkit” which was designed to assist afterschool program supervisors to provide staff members with a basic understanding of the components of a quality afterschool program.  The toolkit contains a training guide, a staff notebook and a DVD with program examples.  The toolkit’s modules provide training on the following afterschool program components:  Quality Programming, Community and Family Involvement, Research and Evaluation, Financing, Staffing and Training, Management and Administration and Policy and Advocacy.  Upon completion of this training, participants will be capable of using the training tool with their staff.

E. Motivating the Middle School Student--This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.

Motivating the adolescent learner can seem like a monumental task at times. What makes the middle years so unique and how can teachers and youth workers find the passion that they demonstrate for their friends, music and food in these challenging years and transform it to academics? This institute will introduce you to the wonderful world of adolescents and find strategies that show  you how to reach out into their world.

F. Aligning the Learning Day: Collaboration Strategies for Principals and After-School Program Directors-- This Institute has reached capacity. It is currently closed.

The National Association of Elementary School Principals has created a workshop designed to bring principals and after-school program directors together to discuss their respective roles, share common goals, and develop action plans for ongoing collaboration. This institute will provide an overview of the workshop contents, which are available in a comprehensive guide for use by groups serving both principals and after-school programs. Discussion will focus on participants’ issues and questions related to collaboration and strategies for building strong working relationships.
