PA PIRC Highlights Family and Community Engagement with Schools – Powerful Partnerships for Student Success

Are you associated with, or do your children attend, a school, a child care program, an afterschool program, or some other program? Does that program have exceptionally effective ways of sharing responsibility for student learning?

If so, PA PIRC invites you to share those effective ways with others. Throughout October, PA PIRC will post specific responses on this webpage page for easy access by all.

As you reflect upon your program or school, you may want to consider the following:

How does the program or school share responsibility for:

  • Knowing each child’s strengths and areas that need growth?
  • Maintaining ongoing, effective communication with parents?
  • Ensuring parents understand the program’s academic and behavioral standards, as well as the curriculum?
  • Establishing high expectations for students and instilling in them the belief that they can succeed?

How does the program or school ensure that parents understand the importance of:
  • Asking their children to explain their school work to them regularly?
  • Designating a daily homework or learning time?
  • Exposing their children to a wide variety of activities and experiences?
  • Exploring with their children their interests and skill areas as part of planning for college or a career?

How does the program or school use the following PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships (www.pta.org) to guide its work?

  • Welcome all families?
  • Communicate effectively?
  • Support student success?
  • Speak up for every child?
  • Share power?
  • Collaborate with the community?

How does the program or school:

  • Demonstrate that it is a family friendly organization (www.center-school.org/pa-pirc/familyfriendlyorganizations)?
  • Celebrate students and families from all cultures?
  • Focus on student learning and success?
  • Affirm family involvement with children’s learning at home, in school and in community programs?
  • Seek families’ opinions?
  • Work with parents, school and community partners to support student success?
  • Make sure that parents are aware of all program or school activities in which they can participate?

Send your responses to PA PIRC Caroline Allen at callen@csc.csiu.org or (717) 763-1661 ext. 205 anytime during October. Thanks for sharing!
