Effective Strategies for Pennsylvania's Schools

The 2008 symposium is the third annual event to highlight effective strategies to support Pennsylvania’s schools in the development of effective strategies to help students reach their educational and career goals.

This symposium will focus on components integral to a wellness and resiliency approach that enables each student to grow into an inspired, productive and fulfilled lifelong learner.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Edmund W. Gordon, a world-renowned expert on issues of affirmative development and minority student achievement. He is one of the conceptual leaders of several major developments in education, including alternatives in educational assessment and supplementary education.

Symposium participants will receive information and resources regarding:

  • Systemic alignment of all services, supports and academic strategies
  • Approaches to infuse resiliency into schools’ work with students
  • Chapter 12 Students and Student Services requirements and strategic plan
  • Success of the Accountability Block Grant initiative, Social and Health Services component
  • Promotion of community schools in Pennsylvania
  • Latest research on effective program models
  • Effective use of school and community resources to remove barriers to learning

 

Who Should Attend?

This symposium will provide valuable information for educators, pupil services personnel, elementary/secondary administrators, guidance counselors and other professionals.

 

Registration Information

  • There is no registration fee to attend, but pre-registration is required.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The 2008 Supporting Students to Success conference will once again be held at the Hilton Harrisburg, 1 North 2nd Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101; phone: 717-233-6000; www.harrisburg.hilton.com. Overnight rooms at the special conference rate may no longer be available for all nights. Please call the hotel directly to inquire about current availability and rates.

 

There is limited availability at nearby hotels as follows:

  • The Crowne Plaza at a rate of $114 plus tax until May 5. Rooms are limited and block may sell out prior to cut-off date so make your reservations early! The Crowne Plaza is one block from the Hilton at 21 S. 2nd Street, Harrisburg. The phone number is (717) 234-5021. Ask for the Student Services Symposium room rate. Hotel parking is valet only at a rate of $14 per day.
  • The Radisson Penn Harris, approximately 5 minutes away from the Hilton, at 1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill has rooms available at a rate of $75 single/$85 double plus tax until April 21. Rooms are limited and block may sell out prior to cut-off date so make your reservations early! Parking Information

Parking for this event is available at the Hilton Harrisburg, Walnut Street Garage, located at 215 Walnut Street.

If the Walnut Street Garage is full and you are unable to enter, the next parking location is Market Square Garage, located at 2nd and Chestnut Streets. If the Market Square Garage is full and you are unable to enter, the next parking location is Locust Street Garage, located at 214 Locust Street. These garages will honor the Hilton discounted rate.

Be sure to try each garage in the order listed below to be able to obtain the discounted rate:

Act 48 Credits

The Center for Schools and Communities, as a division of the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, offers Act 48 professional development credit for those with Pennsylvania teaching or administrative certificates. Participants must attend the workshop from beginning to end to receive credit. If you are interested in receiving Act 48 credit, please check the appropriate box on the registration form.

Please note: In order to receive Act 48 credit you MUST list your Professional ID # on the appropriate Act 48 paperwork supplied at the event. If you are unsure of your Professional ID # you can look it up prior to the event, by going to the Pennsylvania Department of Education website, www.pde.state.pa.us, clicking on the "Act 48 Reporting System" link under the Access Services column and then clicking on the "Get Your Professional Personnel ID" link and completing the required information.
