Applying for the PA CARES (Creating an Atmosphere of Respect and Environment for Success) Grant: Expectations and Tips for Applicants

This session was originally held on September 30, 2009 for PA CARES applicants.

The Center for Safe Schools held an online session for any school that is considering applying for a PA CARES grant. The RFP for this grant was released on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 via Penn Link.

PA CARES is supported with funding from Highmark Healthy High 5, an initiative of the Highmark Foundation, and provides mini-grants of up to $7,500 to school buildings for implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP). Schools that are awarded a PA CARES grant receive program materials, funding to contract with a certified OBPP trainer, support to help the program to succeed and are required to participate in research evaluation.

The session reviewed PA CARES goals, timelines, and requirements, as well as offering tips for completing the online application. The purpose of this session was to:

  • ensure applicants have a basic understanding of what the grant requires prior to submitting an application
  • provide detailed instructions for completing the application, including information about developing a budget
  • review elements of successful and unsuccessful applications, as well as detail some of the issues that support successful implementation of the OBPP.

The session was presented by members of the Center for Safe Schools staff: Stacie Molnar-Main, M.S.Ed., Special Projects Consultant and Sally Canazaro, Grant and Fiscal Management Coordinator.
