The Center for Safe Schools functions as a clearinghouse for information related to school safety, violence prevention and positive outcomes for students, teachers and communities. This website contains practical knowledge about process and procedures in developing comprehensive safe schools plans, especially those related to the emergency response and crisis management components.

In addition to the resources highlighted below, the Center maintains an extensive, searchable database of resources through its Online Networking Environment - ONE. These resources are available from any page in the Center's site, and may be located using keywords, full or partial author and/or title, etc. To access the one type a search term in the search box at the bottom left of the page. Search results include, books, speakers, websites, policies, etc. If you would like to submit information to the datababse, information is availabe within the ONE to help you with that.

Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency - PEMA- School Planning Tool Kit  – This toolkit is designed to provide for "minimum standard" emergency plans for schools in Pennsylvania . The kit includes a two-part plan (Basic Plan and Checklists), a PowerPoint presentation to use in introducing the planning process and a crisis planning guide published by the U.S. Department of Education.

School Safety Recommendations - Pennsylvania Department of Education recommended school safety measures for educational agencies as part of or in addition to existing comprehensive crisis plans for handling potential emergency situation.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Resources – This website offers a list of FEMA resources for parents and teachers.

FEMA Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning for Schools – This eight hour course is a web-based course that focuses on multi-hazard emergency planning for schools.

Safe Schools: Developing Crisis Plans – This document, by Mary Margaret Kerr, Ed.D, offers guidelines for what to do when a crisis happens in your district.

Lincoln IU Pandemic Influenza Emergency Response Planning Resources – This web-site provides a planning matrix and a plan template that outlines the steps and procedures that a school system should take in response to the possibility of pandemic flu.

Tips for School Administrators for Reinforcing School Safety – School violence in the media can cause concern within school communities, even if they are not directly affected by the event(s). This document by the National Association of School Psychologists can help school principals and superintendents reassure students, staff, and parents that schools are generally very safe places for children and youth and reiterate what safety measures and student supports are already in place in their school.

School Violence Prevention and Intervention (Center for Effective Collaboration and Practice) – This site contains documents produced with the support of the Office of Special Education Programs, Safe and Drug Free Schools Program, the Center for Mental Health Services, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention regarding school violence preventions and intervention.

Responding to a Crisis at School (UCLA Center for Mental Health in Schools) – This resource aid packet contains materials such as overviews, outlines, checklists, instruments and other resources that can be reproduced and used for training and practice.

Crisis Response Box (California Department of Education) – A Guide to Help Every School Assemble the Tools and Resources Needed for a Critical Incident Response.

School Safety: Lessons Learned – This booklet from the US States Attorney’s Office, district of Minnesota, Minnesota Department of Education, and Minnesota Department of Public Safety promotes multi-disciplinary communication and cooperation in both the planning and implementation of school safety measures while providing numerous tips as well as local and national sources of assistance.  The booklet also contains a number of articles that can stimulate discussion and lead to the creation of plans for school districts and communities.

Model School Crisis Management Plan (Virginia Department of Education) – This plan is for use by educators and law enforcement officers in developing or refining school division level and building level crisis plans. It includes model policies, procedures and forms that can be adopted or modified to meet local needs and accommodate existing resources.
