Program in the Spotlight:
The Washington Hospital Teen Outreach

On July 28, 2006, four teen fathers met at the Washington Hospital Teen Outreach building to participate in a unique hands-on event that provided an outlet for socialization and an opportunity to produce an heirloom for future generations. Dads Rock!, a new Washington Hospital Teen Outreach event, was inspired by a Fall 2005 PPT/ELECT coordinators’ training session.

Staff from the Washington Hospital Teen Outreach had the idea of procuring unfinished rocking chairs so that the teen fathers could sand, stain and seal them for their own households. One of the program educators secured a donation for the chairs and the necessary woodworking supplies. The fathers were very enthusiastic and took pride in their work. However, carpentry was not the only valuable skill learned. A lesson on the importance of literacy was the educational session that accompanied this hands-on activity.

If have any questions or would like to try this activity with your teen fathers, please contact Lori Zura at lzura@healthyteens.com.
