Pregnant & Parenting Teen Program Information

In 1985, the Pennsylvania Department of Education introduced a school-based Pregnant and Parenting Teen (PPT) initiative to keep students in school, support their attainment of a high school diploma and encourage their self-sufficiency as parents and productive members of their communities.

In this effort to improve outcomes for teen parents and their children, programs were required to provide the following core services:

  • health/nutrition information

  • individual/group counseling

  • parenting/child development education

  • vocational/career counseling

  • assistance in accessing child care and transportation.

All pregnant and parenting teens, female and male, enrolled in school, are eligible for services. The programs are voluntary and the duration of program enrollment extends to graduation or age 22.

Required program outcomes include:

  • Dropout rate should not exceed ten percent;

  • Graduation rate for seniors should be at least ninety percent for those students eligible to graduate;

  • GPAs should reflect overall progress from year-to-year
